Chronic
Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome
In
the late 1970s, and early 1980s, an increasing number of people,
especially young to middle-aged women, began to exhibit a myriad
of symptoms including fatigue, body aches, headaches, mild
depression, cognitive loss, and a variety of other multi-system
complaints. From these symptoms, the ten Fibro my alga was
developed.
Later, due
to an outbreak of fatigue-like illness in Nevada, a new disorder
called chronic fatigue, now recognized as Chronic Fatigue Immune
Dysfunction Syndrome, became known. There is now an absolute
epidemic of fatigue and related complaints. As early as 1982,
it was found the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes
given intravenously were helpful.
Dr.
Ahner has continued his quest to find a common denominator in these
syndromes. With the great advances in cell biology, it is now
understood the intercellular body called the mitochondrion that
is at the root of these disorders.
The best hypothesis
for the development of Fibro myalgia, Chronic Fatigue Immune
Dysfunction Syndrome, and the other environmental illnesses can
be explained by damage to the mitochondrion. The mitochondrion
is the intracellular body that produces the cell's energy. When
various factors, including virus, oxidative damage. free radicals,
environmental toxins, etc., damage the mitochondrion, particularly
the mitochondria DNA. it cannot produce adequate energy for the
cell to maintain normal function. This leads to low energy output
and therefore, cellular dysfunction.
The muscles
and the brain are the most metabolically active, and generally,
this is where symptoms cluster. Without fully understanding the
mechanism, success has been gained by giving intravenous vitamins,
minerals, magnesium, amino acids and other components. As noted
in Dr. Ahner's paper on Chronic I fatigue/Fibromyaligia, he is
now better able to monitor the effects of the free radicals,
and therefore better able to prescribe treatments.
As America's
Baby Boom population ages. the concept of anti-aging therapy
takes on even greater proportions. For the first time, the possibilities
exist to slow the aging process and improve one's quality of
life. Health is a continuum; some are old at 50, and others are
young at 80.
The use of
cellular protective agents, such as N-acetyl-cysteine, Lipoic
Acid, COQIO, etc., is showing great promise in anti-aging medicine.
Chelation therapy, due to its cell rejuvenation ability, is another
great help. Possibly, the most exciting single event in anti-aging
is the discovery and now availability of the hormone called "human
growth hormone." Once only available to the very rich, it
is now accessible to most of us Call about Dr. Ahner's
paper on Hormone Replacement.
Thankfully,
the formerly obscure and misunderstood field of "alternative!
complementary" medicine has now become mainstream. The general
public is beginning to realize that standard allopathic medicine
(the practice of using drugs and surgery to treat end-stage disease)
is not a practical form of healthcare. Many now rely on the numerous
books and newsletters detailing the uses of vitamins, minerals,
amino adds, herbs and other natural substances.
The last 18
years have brought many changes, an incredible amount of knowledge,
and a significant increase in available therapies. Today, as
in 1982, Dr. Ahner believes that treating each case on an individual
basis, watching for biochemical uniqueness. and applying whatever
treatment best fits the patient, is the proper way to practice
medicine. The use of nutrition, dietary supplements, detoxification,
natural hormone replacement, and chelation therapy must be matched
to the needs and desires of the individual.
Dr. Ahner
is extremely proud of his work, and is a respected member of
this specialized field. The following is a brief list of disorders
that are often benefited by Dr. Ahner's specialized approach
of individualized alternative/complementary medicine that focuses
on returning normal function:
Heart Disease,
Stroke, Memory Loss, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease.
Age-related Macular Degeneration, Degenerative Arthritis, Inflammatory
Arthritis (Rheumatoid), Allergy (food and airborne), Digestive
Disturbances (constipation. diarrhea), Fibro myalgia, Chronic
Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, Environmental Illness, Depression,
Osteoporosis, Aging, Hormone Loss.
